WEST Devon councillor David Weeks this week announced his resignation from the UK Independence party ? but says he will continue to serve on the council as an Independent. Cllr Weeks, who represents the Exbourne ward, said he recently became disillusioned because of ?in-fighting? within the party. He said: ?Members are not renewing for various reasons. Since the success of the European elections things have gone into reverse, they haven?t kept up the momentum.? He believes there are too many parties fighting for the same thing, especially since Veritas, the new party headed by former UKIP member Robert Kilroy-Silk, was set up. Cllr Weeks said: ?The votes will be spread too thin to make an impact.? Cllr Weeks, who has served on the borough council since 1996, said he had to do a lot of ?soul-searching? and had ?thought long and hard? before reaching his decision. He said: ?Now I want to go back to what I really believe in ? keeping politics out of local government.?
