TWO West Devon village projects have received funding to improve facilities for the local community from Biffawards?s small grants scheme. Biffaward has given £4,999 to the Brentor village hall and playing field committee. The cash will help ensure a full range of activities can be accommodated and sustained at the grounds by replacing current grass cutting equipment which has reached the end of its useful life. The field has a wide range of uses, including local league cricket matches, a football pitch, an adventure playground for older children, informal sport and play and community events. Committee members said that cutting the grass had become a real struggle, taking up increasing amounts of voluntary time to make the field useable. And Nicholls Hall at Lydford has benefited by £500 which will help complete a three-year programme of refurbishment. The grant will contribute to the installation of an oil-fired central heating system which should improve the opportunities for the hall to be used by various groups in the community. Martin Bettington, chairman of Biffaward said: ?These are very worthwhile projects that Biffaward is pleased to support. The grants awarded to Nicholls Hall and Brentor playing field will help maintain two valuable public amenities.? The small grants scheme is part of a multi-million pound environment fund which uses tax charged on waste taken into landfill sites to help finance environmental projects.
