MEMBERS of Callington Town Band have received a cash boost to help put together a big community production to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the First World War, highlighting what was happening in the town during that time. The band is in the process of organising the production of music and drama which is set to take place in November, in commemoration of two town bandsmen who lost their lives in the war. With the award of a £2,050 grant from FEAST, the band has been able to hire a professional director to oversee the production. Band member Shirley Morse said: 'This is a community effort with the town band fronting the project. 'The production will be the story of World War One with snippets of what happened in and around Callington at the time, so we're busy going through records to find Callington stories fr0m that time. 'We will be including lots of songs from that period and the audience will be given song sheets and will be asked to join in. The town band will providing music along with a choir and some soloists — it should be really good.' There will be a big launch in the run up to the production with the first of a number of singing workshops starting on September 6. The production is due to take place on November 21 and 22 in the town hall. Shirley said the project was in need of young men to take part. 'We do need a lot of younger men to act as soldiers, men of recruiting age, that is where our hole is at the moment.' Anyone who would like to take part, either as a singer, actor or to help back-stage should contact Shirley on 01579 350336 or email [email protected]">[email protected]
