SIXTHFORMERS from Kelly College enjoyed a once in a lifetime trip to donate £1,400 to schools and wildlife reserves in South Africa this summer.

The money, raised by students before departing, was for their project at Insonge School. It allowed them to buy sports equipment and two computers to promote long term communication between the Kelly and Zulu pupils.

But after the donation, there was enough time and money left over for the Kelleians to do a little more. The group decided to sponsor Boston, a Crowned Crane, who was brought to the Crane Sanctuary as a day old chick and, with the help of sponsors, is now growing into a very inquisitive young adult.

The trip was concluded with the opportunity for pupils to complete their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Assessment walk in the Drakensburg Mountains. The trip took place thanks to support from the Original Pasty House, Ginsters, the Meavy Village Fair organisers as well as the parents and friends of the Expeditioners.

It was not just these intrepid pupils who enjoyed an eventful summer. Junior and senior cadets from Kelly College's Combined Cadet Force enjoyed a superb summer camp at RAF St Mawgan in Cornwall.

Coasteering, surfing and beach volleyball was followed by a day in 'green kit' for military skills training. However, this year the interesting addition of 'fighting in built up areas' (FIBUA) proved enticing to all. The cadets also enjoyed putting their marksmanship and paddling skills to the test at Millpool ranges and St Stithians Lake respectively.

The college would like to thank the cadet training teams for all their usual hard work and enthusiasm.
