NEW and young drivers in West Devon can now steer clear of potential pitfalls when purchasing their first used car.

Devon County Council's Trading Standards, in partnership with a number of Buy with Confidence scheme members, has produced a booklet providing expert advice to help overcome the problems that can arise when buying a used car.

The MotorWise booklet provides clear, practical advice on the potential finance options when buying a car; the buyer's statutory rights when purchasing from a trader or a private seller; a step by step guide to dispute resolution should things go wrong as well as handy pointers on general maintenance and where to find out how to drive in an eco-friendly way.

Also included in the booklet is a useful pull-out checklist which can be detached and taken along when viewing a car. The checklist has the necessary prompts and direction a buyer may need to ensure the car they are buying not only meets their needs, but is also of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described.

Cllr Roger Croad, cabinet member for Environmental and Regulatory Services, said: 'Buying a car can be a worry at any time but when it's your first time it can be really daunting.

'This new booklet is an excellent resource and one that anyone, young or old, can use with confidence when buying their first car.'

The booklet was launched yesterday (Wednesday, September 16).

The advice booklet will also be available to download from Monday, September 21 as well as being available in local libraries, a number of Devon based driving schools and by calling 01392 381381.
