BOGUS officials have been implicated in dozens of thefts over the last 12 months, West Devon police warned this week.

People pretending to search for gas and water leaks, or checking fire and smoke alarms for local authorities have gained access to homes and workplaces to commit crimes.

Sgt Gary Neeves said people should check identity cards carefully — all genuine officials carry them — nor should they be afraid to refuse entry to suspicious characters, before calling the police.

Police are asking farmers, landowners and members of the public to make sure paddocks are stock-proof following a serious accident recently near Plymouth caused by loose livestock.

Sgt Neeves said there had been a steep rise in the number of emergency calls to the police about animals running wild on the roads and they were keen to prevent any similar incidents.
