POLICE have issued a description of a man they want to interview after an elderly couple from Stoke Climsland were robbed of their savings. The suspect called on the couple claiming he was a water company official and needed to check their council bungalow for a water leak. When the 76-year-old woman opened the door, he barged past her. He then distracted the couple by asking them to do various tasks in connection with the leak, while he searched their bedroom and stole hundreds of pounds from a drawer. After becoming suspicious, the 78-year-old husband, who is disabled, asked for identification and the man left quickly. The couple have both been in shock since the incident which happened at around 1.30pm on December 20. The suspect is white, aged 25 to 30 and about 5ft 8ins tall. He has short, dark hair and was wearing a dark blue woollen jumper with dark blue trousers. WPC Michelle Turvey, of Callington Police, who is investigating the crime, said: ?I am just totally gutted for them, especially as they are in such a vulnerable age group. They are devastated and still in shock. ?We have to be less trusting and a bit more inquisitive towards people we don?t know ? ask more questions, particularly if you are elderly.? Police advise householders to open their door on a chain to unexpected callers and not to let them in until they have checked identification. Anyone with information is asked to contact WPC Turvey on 08452 777444, quoting crime number BN/04/638.
