DEVON and Cornwall Police this week said there have been reports of bogus callers in the West Devon area, purporting to be from various companies, offering substandard work for extremely high prices. The callers claim to be from the water board, gardening services including the cutting of trees, and tarmaccers. The most recent report is of two males purporting to be from the water board, stating that they needed to turn the water pressure down in the road due to a burst water main at a block of flats nearby. The first is described as white, of average height, with black hair, slim build with red blotches above both eyes. Police said he was challenged for ID, which he claimed was in his van. He was also described later as being of plump build and in his 40s. The second male is described as white, 5ft 8ins tall, approximately mid 30s with receding dark hair and a small moustache wearing dark clothing. Although the resident allowed the first male in he was accompanied at all times and after looking at both the kitchen sink and washing machine, he said he would have to come back, which he never did. The two males headed to other properties in the road and at one resident?s house offered to do handy man work. A spokesman said: ?Police would like to take this opportunity to remind you that at this time of year there are many reports made of bogus callers throughout South and West Devon who may call on the vulnerable or elderly. ?Keep an eye out for neighbours who may be easily targeted by these criminals. Remember to always keep the chain on the door and verify the caller?s identity by phoning the company in the phone book. ?If in doubt keep them out. If you have any concerns then please contact us on the general enquiries number 08452 777 444.? Information can also be passed to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
