'SAD and disgraceful' was how a man described his feelings on finding two dead dogs and their bedding seemingly dumped over the edge of a bridge crossing the Meavy River on Monday. The local resident said he was crossing the little hump-back bridge in the village on Monday morning when he saw the bodies in the river. 'I was crossing the river at Meavy and encountered a very upset woman walking her dog,' he said. 'She pointed out the two dead dogs, their bed and bedding dumped over the edge of the bridge. They appeared to be dead prior to dumping, which must have been during the night or early in the morning, but it is still a very sad and unpleasant thing to find — and to do.' The resident said he contacted the police and the Dartmoor National Park Authority to alert them to the incident, and received a reply from the National Park warden to say that a local dog warden had removed the dogs. 'It is quite disturbing that anyone should think this is acceptable, and does beg the question of how and why two dogs died at the same time,' he said. 'Surely if they were euthanised by a vet, the bodies would be disposed of properly. 'Also disturbing was the sight of a family with young children playing downstream at the ford later that morning when I crossed the bridge again before the dead animals had been removed.' The bodies were removed by West Devon Borough Council's dog warden. A spokesperson for borough council, said: 'A Dartmoor National Park Authority ranger alerted the borough council's dog warden to the discovery of two dead dogs in the river near to Meavy bridge on Monday, June 23. 'Dog bedding in a plastic bag was also found nearby. It is believed the dogs were Staffordshire Bull Terriers. 'Our dog warden arranged for our contractor to collect the bodies which have been taken to the RSPCA. We understand the animal welfare charity is planning to do a post mortem examination and carry out an investigation.' A spokesman for the police said anyone with any information regarding the incident should call them on 101.
