AFTER almost two years of planning, campaigning and a lot of work, BMX group Tavi Riders will see their hard graft paid off as they officially open the town's new BMX trails with a Hallowe'en-themed 'Opening Jam' this weekend.
Tavi Riders are inviting everyone to dress up and join them at the opening of the BMX park in the Meadows on Sunday, where visitors can watch or join in with some relaxed competitions, a barbecue and live music.
The two-year project has been spearheaded by Tavi Riders and supported by Tavistock Youth Café, after BMX riders decided they needed somewhere safe to ride instead of using the unsuitable skate park or secluded wooded areas.
The track was designed by BMX rider Steve Tonkin, who owns a popular BMX track in Portreath, Cornwall, after Tavi Riders submitted a proposal and agreed a lease with the town council, which owns the former putting green where the track has been built.
Steve has worked with Tavi Riders throughout the building process, to teach them how to maintain the track.
Sponsored by Lifer BMX and several other companies, the BMX track is now ready to be used and Tavi Riders are looking forward to celebrating the opening.
Vicki Lloyd, of Tavistock Youth Café, said: 'They have put an awful lot of hard work into this project — I'm really proud of the young people and really pleased the town council has worked with us, let us use their land and helped the young people by giving them a space that is safe and accessible. The track has already had a lot of interest across Devon and Cornwall.
'We are having a few relaxed competitions like the best skid, best jump and best costume, and the sponsors will be giving prizes. The youth café will be providing the barbecue and we want everyone in fancy dress.'
Music for the Opening Jam will be provided by youth-based bands Stacked, DJ John Harley and Full Flavour Function — who teach music at the youth café.
The jam coincides with Youth Work Week and representatives from Devon Youth Services will be in attendance.
The Opening Jam takes place on Sunday October 31 from noon onwards and is free for everyone.
