A SCHEME to supply Tavistock Town Council works staff with uniform clothing to the tune of almost £1,500 a year was last week shelved by members of the finance committee, pending further investigations.

The previous council suggested that works staff be equipped with polo shirts, sweatshirts and protective outer clothing, in a clear town council colour with a logo.

Initial inquiries revealed that to equip 13 members of staff with three navy blue polo shirts and sweatshirts each, plus coats, embroidered with the town crest and lettering, would cost £1,456.23.

Cllr Norma Woodcock was concerned that navy blue was not ?distinct? enough for council staff working in the Meadows or pannier market.

?They ought to be approachable and seen to be the right person to be talking to. I think it gives some authority and also gives a sense of teamwork, but it needs to be something instantly recognisable, like the Lions. Could we think of another colour we would be happy to be associated with?? she asked.

Cllr Robin Pike questioned the necessity of polo shirts or sweatshirts.

?There?s a company that leases overalls with names ? and they do the laundering as well,? he said.

Cllr Betty Batchelor suggested identity sashes would be cheaper.

The committee agreed the clerk should order a free sample of a sweatshirt and polo shirt in royal blue, while alternative colours and ideas were investigated.
