TWO gardeners from West Devon have returned home as winners from this year's Chelsea Flower Show. Not only were three gold awards and a best in show presented, a Royal Warrant Appointment was also issued. Peter Harket, who lives in Exbourne and runs P H Harket Ltd, and Tim Penrose who owns Bowden Hostas in Sticklepath, have expressed delight at winning the prestigious awards. Mr Harket was the project manager for two gardens at the show. He organised the building of the garden for designer Arabella Lennox Boyd, sponsored by the Daily Telegraph, and the garden for designer Tom Stuart-Smith, sponsored by Laurent Perrier Champagne. He has been a project manager at Chelsea for three years and has seen many gold awards presented to the gardens under his watch. But this year was the first time he has seen two of the gardens he has worked on both win gold and even best in show. Mr Harket said: 'I arrange all the materials to get to the site, arrange guys to build it and make sure we have the right machines — I basically run the site as project manager. 'This is my third year as a project manager and we have won gold and silver awards before, but this is the first time we have won gold for both gardens. The judges also judged the Laurent Perrier garden as the best in show. 'To get two golds and the best in show is absolutely amazing.' All the plants used in the gardens are grown at Crocus, a company for which Mr Harket used to work. Mr Penrose's display was within the floral marquee in Chelsea, along with 150 other exhibitors from around the world. This year's show proved to be one for the books, as not only did Bowden Hostas win its fourth gold award in four years, it was awarded the rare and prestigious appointment of a Royal Warrant — a grant currently issued by three members of the Royal Family: the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh and the Prince of Wales. Mr Penrose said: 'To be at Chelsea was an honour, to win four times in a row is remarkable and to win gold is unbelievable. We are hopefully putting Sticklepath on the map. 'We were awarded a Royal Warrant and are very proud to be honoured in this way.' Bowden Hostas is currently packing for its next show, north of the border — 'Gardening Scotland'.
