A FIRE at a caravan site in Winkleigh on Sunday destroyed 20 static caravans. Five fire engines, from Okehampton, North Tawton, Hatherleigh, Chulmleigh and Torrington were called to the blaze at the Surf Bay Caravan Park on Sunday. The fire was reported by a neighbour who noticed smoke just after 8pm. At the time of the call only five disused caravans were alight, but by the time fire officers arrived at the scene, the fire had spread. Several caravans were succesfully isolated and saved from the flames, but 20 were severely damaged. An investigation has been launched into the incident. Director of the company Kenny Ansell said that no power, gas or electricity was connected to the compound: 'It was a wet night so it's hard to imagine how it could have started.' Devon Fire and Rescue service was also called to a small cooker fire in Okehampton and a chimney fire in North Tawton over the weekend. And on Monday a fire engine from Okehampton was called to a car which had been broken into and set alight in the Giblands Park car-park in Okehampton. The car was only slightly damaged, but the incident is being treated as arson.
