EIGHTY per cent of a kitchen was damaged by a house fire at Kelly College last Friday. Two fire appliances from Tavistock attended the scene at 11pm and managed to contain the blaze to the kitchen, using one hose reel and two sets of breathing apparatus. Tavistock Fire Station officer Tim Smith has reminded people never to put water on a chip pan fire, to keep their smoke alarms properly maintained and to keep their house keys by the door if they need to exit the building quickly when the doors are locked. He said the two occupants of the house had been lucky to escape the blaze. Fire crews from Tavistock were also called to a vehicle fire at Pork Hill near Princetown last Thursday (November 17), where a military ?moon buggy? overheated. Fortunately it was not carrying any armaments at the time. A chimney fire at the Old Rectory in Mary Tavy also kept them busy the following day.
