HISTORY was made at St Rumon's and St Peter's schools last week as they joined together to form the Tavistock Church Schools Federation.

The Bishop of Plymouth the Rt Rev John Ford unveiled plaques at both Church of England schools to commemorate the event after a special service was held at St Eustachius Church.

St Rumon's, which is an infant school and St Peter's, a junior school, will now share a headteacher, Clare Wesson, and a governing body.

Chairman of Governors Tim Jones said the two schools had always worked independently in the past but were now coming together, sharing aims and leadership, all for the benefit of the pupils.

'Now it is going to be the norm for children to go from St Rumon's to St Peter's and the federation will help the transfer of pupils from one school to another,' he said. 'The schools will still keep their own identity and their own name but they will be working as part of the Tavistock Church Schools Federation.

'We as governors think that it has all the advantages of working together without some of the disadvantages of a merger.'

The schools currently have around 260 pupils between them. Bishop John told the children that being part of a bigger community would help them to grow and develop: 'The schools are not coming together for any other reason than to make it better for all of you,' he said.
