TWO young boys under ten will be showing off their pedal power by cycling 100 miles over three days to raise funds for charity.
Mary Tavy and Brentor Primary School pupils Charlie and Freddie Day, aged six and nine, are set to cycle around 30 miles a day from Ilfracombe to Plymouth from September 19 to 21, in what they are calling ‘Freddie and Charlie’s Sustran’s Coast to Coast 100 mile cycle’.
They are aiming to raise at least £1,200 to split between Children’s Hospice South West and the boys’ cycle group Dartmoor Velo.
The boys will be accompanied on the journey by family members and on the final day will be joined in Tavistock by some other members of their bike club to complete the last 20 miles to Plymouth with them.
The duo’s mother, Rachel Day, said that she, their father and grandfather would be taking it in turns to cycle with them to lend support — ‘Let’s hope we can keep up,’ she said.
‘Freddie and Charlie have both been cycling on two wheels since they were three,’ said Rachel. ‘They are now nine and six and spend the majority of their time pedalling around the neighbourhood, racing at cyclocross races, mountain bike races and trying to convince each other to do bigger and bigger jumps down the driveway!
‘As they have got older, they have become more aware of how “lucky” they are or feel.
‘We had discussed completing a cycling challenge on one of our many bike rides up and down the Granite Way and Freddie came up with the idea of raising money for charity.
‘They chose Children’s Hospice South West as they can see how much of an impact the money they raise will have on making the most of children’s lives when their time is so short and precious.
‘The 100-mile Devon coast to coast seemed like an ambitious but achievable challenge for them. They are both very talented and absolutely love biking.’
The boys have been busy raising sponsorship ahead of the ride on their Just Giving website.
They have already raised more than 80% of their target but hope to be able to raise as much as possible for the two causes.
‘All donations will be split between Children’s Hospice South West and Dartmoor Velo, which is the boys’ bike club,’ said Rachel.
‘Both organisations are not for profit and do exceptional work enabling children to have access to activities that they otherwise wouldn’t necessarily have access to.
‘They will be splitting the 100-mile journey over three days. It is no mean feat.
‘If you have ever cycled 30 miles in one day, you will know quite how tiring it is — especially when you are six.
‘We are super proud of the boys, they are both such determined young people.
‘They are both nervous about the ride — Charlie in particular.
‘He is only six and it is a long, long way for six-year-old legs.
‘They are both so enthusiastic and positive though, that I have no doubt that they will take it all in their stride and hopefully will inspire other young people to get on their bikes and pedal more!’
