CHAGFORD auctioneers Rendells report another highly successful auction sale by their ?Market-in-Land? department. Last Thursday, Moretonhampstead Sports Centre was the venue for a serious ?bidding war? for six acres of pasture and a small wooden agricultural shed adjacent to the Venton Straight at Whiddon Down. Bidding opened at £20,000 and rose at speed as two bidders competed. At £46,000 increments reduced to £100 and proceeded in rapid fire to a concluding bid of £50,000 (£8,333 per acre) made by a buyer from Exeter. A second six-acre field, at Bridford, failed to reach its reserve price although this, also, had been the subject of sharp competition in the room to a similar sum per acre. The auctioneer was Timothy Garratt.
