Devon Premier Cup

Brixham United 2

Bere Alston United 5

DESPITE not being at their best and missing leading goal scorer Jason Cordice, Bere booked their passage into the next round with this comfortable victory at Brixham United.

Bere started slowly and it was not until the 15th minute that they clicked into gear and took the lead when Mike Cornew was sent clear by Paul Simpson and drilled his shot low into the bottom corner.

In blustery conditions, the game continued to look scrappy but Bere increased their lead on the half hour when Paul Simpson latched onto Mike Curtis's long clearance and sent a looping header over the advancing Brixham keeper.

Two up at the break, Bere missed a host of chances at the beginning of the second half and Marcus Pethick was also unlucky to see his effort from 30 yards hit the crossbar.

Bere were made to pay for those misses as Brixham pulled a goal back only for Marcus Pethick to restore Bere's two goal advantage with a cross-cum-shot a minute later. Bere made it 4-1 on the hour when Mike Curtis lashed home Paul Simpson's corner from the edge of the penalty area and Brixham reduced the arrears again when Will Westlake was adjudged to have handled the ball and the home side despatched the resulting penalty. With ten minutes to go Dan Follett completed the scoring when he raced onto Ryan McShane's through ball and coolly slotted the ball past the Brixham keeper.
