Carlsberg South West Peninsula division one West
Okehampton Argyle 5
Mousehole 0
ARGYLE put in a tremendous performance at Simmons Park on Saturday to end a winless run of nine games. The first half was an even affair and neither side was able to create a clear cut chance but Argyle with Luke Alden always showing class in midfield ably supported by Ed Squire, Ricky Wooldridge and Alex Wren looked the more dangerous.
A minute before half time, they took the lead when Alden showed superb control in the box to bring the ball down, before beating his marker and firing the ball home from a narrow angle.
The game was put to bed by Argyle in a tremendous five minute spell in the second half. Eight minutes after the break, Ben Waters was pushed as a cross came in from the left and the referee awarded a penalty. Waters took this himself and drove the ball home into the corner of the net to double Okehampton's advantage.
A minute later Steve Williams was released on the left and he squared the ball back to Luke Alden, who blasted the ball into the bottom corner from the edge of the box giving the Mousehole keeper no chance.
It only took another three minutes before Williams was released on the right and using his pace to get behind the visitors' defence squared the ball back for Ben Waters to fire home from 15 yards. Five minutes later, Mousehole were reduced to ten men when defender James Tonkin received his second yellow card after bringing Alden down from behind on the edge of the box.
Eight minutes from time, Okehampton increased their lead when a superb through ball from Ed Squire played in Ben Waters to fire past the stranded Mousehole keeper and complete his hat trick.
To their credit, Mousehole kept playing football and were unlucky not to reduce the arrears in the last five minutes when a good shot from Will Elstone rebounded from the home crossbar and Anthony Nicholls' follow-up shot was superbly pushed away for a corner by Okes keeper Harry Geering.
This was a great display of attacking football and a great all round team performance by Okehampton who fully deserved their win. Man of the match went to Ben Waters for his hat-trick with Luke Alden superb in midfield.
Holsworthy 3
Okehampton Argyle 2
ARGYLE were unlucky not to come away with a share of the points from this competitive midweek away match under floodlights.
Both sides had a lively set of forwards on show and both teams created chances. Argyle took the lead on 25 minutes when a good passing movement put Luke Alden in to score with a low shot in the bottom corner.
They could easily have doubled their advantage within five minutes when Alden beat his defender and rounded the home keeper before firing against the post. But it was Holsworthy who finished the first half the stronger and the ten minutes up until half-time saw the Okes' defence under considerable pressure. On 37 minutes, Holsworthy were level, when the Argyle defence failed to deal with a left wing corner from Paul Banks and Matt Carroll fired home the loose ball from six yards.
Within minutes, the home side rattled the Argyle crossbar and then in the last minute of the half, another Paul Banks corner caused problems for the home defence and Okehampton's James Williams was unfortunate to head the ball into his own net.
Argyle came out determined to pull the game back in the second half and Luke Alden and Ed Squire in midfield began to probe the home defence and create openings for the hard working front runners Steve Madge and Ben Waters. Argyle levelled on 62 minutes when Alden played Ben Waters in inside the box, only for the centre-forward to be tripped. Up stepped Waters to fire home the penalty.
The game was lost on 73 minutes when Argyle's defence went to sleep and a long looping cross was nodded home by Craig Allan who had a free header in front of goal. Argyle desperately tried to save the game and pushed defenders forward, but the closest they came was when a James Williams header from a corner crashed against the Holsworthy crossbar.
n This Saturday Argyle are at home to Plymstock Utd, kick-off 3pm; Argyle thirds are home in Devon and Exeter division eight to Offwell Rangers seconds home 3pm.
