CHILDREN from Mary Tavy and Brentor Primary School enjoyed a 'behind the scenes' visit to Tesco in Callington recently as part of the store's nationwide Farm to Fork initiative.
The initiative aims to get the next generation of children interested in where their food comes from. Children from schools across the country visit their local Tesco store and are able to bake bread, smell and taste different cheeses and fruit and learn how to fillet fish.
Head teacher Nicky Pratten said: 'The children thoroughly enjoyed their visit to Tesco in Callington as part of the initiative. They were impressed at what goes on behind the scenes of a large superstore but more importantly, learned a vast amount about where their food comes from and the processes involved.'
One pupil said after the visit: 'It was absolutely amazing. The amount of facts that we have learned is wonderful and we now know so much more about supermarkets and where our food comes from, but we think everybody's favourite part was tasting the three types of chocolate!'
Tesco 'better service' manager Vicky Rosevear said: 'We were delighted to let the children see behind the scenes at Tesco as part of our Farm to Fork initiative. They were able to see how to make bread, sampled different kinds of fruit and cheese and operated a till — but the thing they enjoyed the most was going into the freezer!
'They asked lots of questions and certainly kept us on our toes!'
