LOVATON Farm in South Tawton has been crowned the best small meat producer in the Good Housekeeping Food Awards 2014. The Good Housekeeping Food Awards celebrate all that is good about food and drink, and this year attracted thousands of votes from across the UK. The Good Housekeeping cookery team handpicked the best small producers who endorse good animal welfare or minimal environmental impact at fair prices. Jane Barber, managing director and farm owner, said: 'It's fantastic to receive such recognition. The award was for small producers and we are small, so it was a lovely surprise to win. 'Someone obviously nominated us for this award and the Good Housekeeping team shortlisted us, tried our products and really liked them.' Good Housekeeping editorial director Lindsay Nicholson said: 'Now in its tenth year, the quality of winners and those shortlisted for the Good Housekeeping Food Awards 2014 has been especially strong and this, combined with a massive voting response from readers and expert opinions provides us with the most comprehensive picture of all that's best in British food right now.' The farm's meat was also featured on Radio 2 in April, as Nigel Barden cooked up a beef tagine on the Simon Mayo show. Jane said: 'The chef, Nigel Barden from Radio 2, is on the board of judges at the Great Taste Awards, which we did well in last summer. 'It was great hearing the compliments about the beef from those tasting it in the studio and he was full of compliments about the meat, traceability and the way it is reared. 'We belong to a Beef Labelling Scheme, which audits us each year, making sure that all our claims about our beef are true, therefore reassuring our customers of its traceability.'
