A TEENAGE girl from Okehampton has won a regional award for her fundraising for the UK's leading young people's cancer charity, while battling the disease herself.

13-year-old Bea Holman-Brooks won Child of the Year at the Toast of Devon Awards after raising more than £30,000 for CLIC Sargent through a variety of fundraising events.

The awards, run by Heart Radio, recognise local people who make a real difference in Devon.

Bea was nominated for the honour by CLIC Sargent, which has been supporting her and her family since she was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in January 2009.

Bea's mother, Helen, said: 'Bea was very excited to attend the awards dinner last week, despite being quite unwell just lately, and feels very privileged to win this award.

'Even though she has already raised an incredible amount this has inspired her to continue fundraising and she is determined to raise as much money as possible for CLIC Sargent next year. We are so proud of her.'

Alison Ramsay, local community fundraising manager for CLIC Sargent said:  'Bea is a very bubbly character and inspires all around her.  She has set about fundraising for CLIC Sargent to help the charity continue to provide care and support for other children with cancer like her.  Her fund has so far raised over £30,000 for the charity.

'She attends events, gives inspirational talks and helps in whatever way she can. She has also been the face behind a local blood transfusion campaign.  Bea is a fighter and a fantastic little fundraiser who really deserves this recognition for her bravery and contribution to help others.'
