DEVON County Council is asking for further patience and tolerance this weekend while it completes enhancement work in the town centre.
The works, which have taken ten weeks, will culminate in the planing off and resurfacing of the road from just west of High Street to just east of North Road.
Two diversions will be in place to reduce congestion and long delays.
The traffic entering the town from the east will be diverted into Mill Road to re-join Fore Street via George Street.
The second diversion will be for traffic entering the town from the west and will be an advisory route only — from New Road Cross, along the A386 to Ellmead Cross and then into the town along Upcott Hill.
Traffic will still be able to enter the town along New Road but there will be long delays as the temporary signals, which are working at the moment, will be extended further into New Road to allow single lane traffic throughout the works.
This work will take effect from 1pm on Saturday until 10pm and will continue on Sunday until it is completed, although noisy work will stop at 10pm.
The resurfacing and the road markings are weather dependent so if it is either too cold or too wet then this work will be delayed.
This is the last major part of the enhancement scheme which will then enable the completion of road markings and signs, the commissioning of the new traffic signals, the undergrounding of electric cables and the erection and connection of the street lighting columns.
Project manager for Devon County Council Tessa Jennings said she greatly appreciate people's tolerance to the works as they had moved through Okehampton's main thoroughfare and she hoped people could bear with them for one more weekend.
