THE atmosphere at Castle Drogo this weekend will be Civil indeed — as the 6th Pennsylvania Volunteer Cavalry are re-enacting a 'recruitment camp' in the castle grounds.

The cavalry, also known as Rush's Lancers, will be commemorating the people from Devon and Cornwall who joined up to fight in the American Civil War.

By visiting Castle Drogo this weekend you can wander around and talk to the soldiers and their families — and find out what life on the road was like 140 years ago.
