THIS year promises to be a busy one at Castle Drogo as the National Trust will be opening the huge five foot wide front door seven days a week from March 14.

The estate has not opened seven days a week before and staff are looking for new people to join the group of more than 120 volunteers to help make this happen.

As a charity, the National Trust is dependent on the help of its volunteers. It would not be possible to open Castle Drogo without the volunteers who generously give their time.

Volunteers have the opportunity to meet new people, learn new things, use their skills and, of course, have fun within the 'last castle to be built in England'.

Pauline Fletcher, a volunteer at Castle Drogo for 20 years, said: 'The world has changed in the 20 years that I have been volunteering at Drogo, but the castle is as fascinating as ever.

'It is a joy to bring this wonderful house to life for all our visitors, especially children who are in awe at the size of the building, the splendour of the rooms and the beauty of the surroundings.'

There are many varied opportunities for volunteers across the site. They include care for the house, supporting the varied events programme and providing customer service at visitor reception. The enterprise team is also looking for volunteers to help in the busy shop and tea room.

Volunteers can even join the 'Living History' team and be a servant from 1928!

Drogo is particularly looking for volunteers to act as room guides or garden stewards this season, especially on Tuesdays and at weekends.

Volunteers do not need to have any prior knowledge as all necessary information, training and full support is provided. Volunteers also have travelling expenses reimbursed and have the opportunity to go out for trips and meals.
