Callington 4

Tavistock 2

CALLINGTON produced a battling performance on Saturday to dent Tavistock?s championship hopes in front of a good sized crowd at Ginsters Marshfield Parc.

The Lambs were without the services of keeper Andy Meeds whose long run of more than 200 consecutive appearances came to an end. It gave Craig Howells the opportunity to make a first team appearance.

Sustained pressure brought them their opening goal on 17 minutes. Callington were stopped by a foul committed just outside the area and up popped Tom Barwell and his curling free kick nestled into the far corner of the net.

With the home fans still celebrating their first goal, the team struck again to double their lead only 60 seconds later. Again the move started on the right. This time it was Chris Tilbury who created the chance and his cross found Gavin West unmarked in the area and he calmly planted the ball past the stranded Howells to score.

The Lambs missed a chance two minutes later when from a Jeff Babb cross Callington keeper Andy Brenton dropped the ball only for Paul Smith to stab wide from close range.

In the second half a James Cole pass was back-heeled by Babb into the path of Simon Parnell and despite being forced out wide he was allowed to cut back in and find space to put the ball wide of Brenton.

The comeback was short lived as within five minutes Callington regained their two-goal advantage. Andy Sheer beat Cole out wide to advance and send in a low cross for West to get his second.

The Lambs clawed another goal back as Babb crossed low for Paul Adcock to slot home and felt they had equalised with 15 minutes remaining but an assistant deemed Babb offside as he swept the ball over Brenton.

The result was put beyond doubt on full time when Crow?s back header put the Lambs defence in trouble and Barwell, unmarked at the far post, stabbed home.
