Barry Ware was diagnosed with myeloma, a form of leukaemia, in 2004. He underwent several months of chemotherapy and a blood stem cell transplant. Following his treatment, Barry decided to write 'True Stories and Tales of a Chap from Northlew, Devon'. The book looks back at Barry's memories of growing up in Northlew in the 1940s and 1950s, including memories of country pursuits, village life, Christmas time, rabbit trapping and even trips to the dentist.
He personally paid to have 900 copies of his book printed, so that all the proceeds can go towards ELF.
The book has proven popular, with copies being sent as far as New Zealand and South Africa.
Barry recently visited ELF in Exeter to present a cheque for £1,045 to the charity.
There are still some copies available, either from the Post Office at North Tawton, the shop at Northlew, or by calling Barry on 01837 82499.
