KELLY Choral Society and Orchestra, under their conductor Andrew Wilson, presented a delightful evening of Baroque music in Tavistock Parish Church recently. They began with Bach?s cantata Sleepers Wake! in which the urgency of Bach?s call to the faithful was well illustrated. After this they were joined by the soprano Caren Friel for the Christmas sequence from Handel?s Messiah. Caren has a warm, clear voice which she used to great effect in both recitative and aria. The orchestra also had their chance to shine in the Pastoral Symphony, and the choral items were sung with warmth and vivacity, especially ?For unto us? and ?Glory to God?. Mary Mazur Park gave extra strength and depth from the organ throughout the concert. Five movements from Vivaldi?s Gloria followed the interval, opening with a great shout of praise and ending with the soprano solo Domine Deus. After two short movements from Charpentier?s Messe de Minuit, the concert ended with items from Bach?s Christmas Oratorio, beginning with the Symphony, where the orchestra could again shine, and continuing with four choral items. This was an enjoyable concert, well planned for the run-up to Christmas.
