A GROUP of sixth formers from Okehampton College have received awards signed by Secretary of State for Education and Skills Estelle Morris for carrying out 200 hours of voluntary work in their communities.

Lisa Yeo, Sarah Milburn, Jo Lake, Lucy Cudlip, Claire Barratt and Emma Jelley took part in the Devon Youth Association's Millennium Volunteers Project, which aims to offer something for everyone aged between 16 and 24.

Recognising the contribution that young people make within their communities and encouraging participation and involvement are aspects of the scheme, which also provides support to young people as they learn.

The students from Okehampton College have been involved in youth work, peer support, teaching sports, music, craft and drama and community help during the foot and mouth crisis across the Okehampton area.

The Devon Youth Association Millennium Volunteers Project is part of a nationwide initiative funded by the Department for Education and Skills, initially for three years.

At its launch, minister for Employment and Equal Opportunities Margaret Hodge said: 'Now thousands more young people will have the opportunity, through volunteering, to improve their community and their career prospects — and have a great time doing it.

'Millennium Volunteers are serious about addressing the issues of the day — from racism to drug abuse.'
