A COMPANY based in Drakewalls which is aiming to reinvent wooden toys for children has won a Cornwall-wide business plan competition.

Rokka Play, run by Samantha Spake and Vanessa Harris, has received £25,000 in cash, a business loan, legal, financial, design and marketing services, a radio ad campaign and mentoring services.

The company designs multi-functional, educational wooden toys which are aimed at helping children use their imagination.

The idea was sparked by watching Mrs Spake and partner Nick Urwin's daughter Greta use furniture to try and make dens. Harnessing Mr Urwin's experience and skills as a designer the company has come up with adaptable wooden toys that children can use to build their own play scenarios.

Rokka Play is targetting retailers such as John Lewis, Hamleys and Selfridges and is hoping to see its products in the stores for Christmas.

Vanessa Harris said: 'It was an absolute shock to win. It will make a huge difference. We can launch this product with the backing of professional and experienced people who are willing us to be successful.'

The competition attracted 59 entries. One of the judges, Mark Duddridge, managing director of Ginsters, said: The finalists were extraordinarily diverse but Rokka Play impressed all the judges with its innovation, professionalism and ambition.'
