Territorially the visitors started the better but on 10 minutes Gunnislake came close to scoring. Jarryd Kelly beat two defenders in the right wing area before unleashing a powerful shot that hit the inside of the post before rebounding to safety. Southgate continued to have more of the ball but Gunnislake defended well ensuring their keeper Andy Brenton was not required to make a meaningful save. With half time approaching the home team scored an excellent opener. Lee Douglas played Dave Yorath down the wing and he crossed for Kelly to side foot home from 8 yards. A three goal burst in the opening 10 minutes of the second half saw the game over as a contest. Kelly grabbed two of these to complete his hat trick, Matt Avery and Yorath providing the assists. Yorath scored the fourth with a good low finish. On 60 minutes Gunnislake twice half cleared a Southgate corner but were punished for reacting slower to the second ball when a visiting attacker struck home well from 18 yards.
