A RESCUE mission in Brazil, which helps to give deprived street children in Brazil a better start in life, will benefit this week thanks to a charity evening held at a Yelverton pub. Last Thursday at the Leg O? Mutton pub, an auction of gifts and a quiz evening raised a splendid total of a £1,000. Among the lots up for grabs was a game of golf at the Open championship course at The Belfry, another at racing driver Nigel Mansell?s golf course at Woodbury in Devon, games of paintballing, and various other quality gifts donated by individuals and businesses. The evening was organised by landlord Howard Boulter, along with his son and joint licensee Iain Boulter. The auctioneer and quiz master was Jeremy Tucker. The connection with the Yelverton inn and the South American charity is pub regular Brazilian Marcos Campos, who is married to Shelley, the daughter of Kevan and Brigid Keegan of Tavistock. Marcos has been raising money to help a rescue mission at Goiania in his native country. The mission, which has been going for 14 years, has three main projects reaching the street children and other children at risk. There is a drug rehabilitation centre for street boys, who are referred there by the police or social services. There is a preventative unit where children vulnerable to the surrounding drug and gang culture are giving food and a basic education. A further mission at the Vera Cruz Community Centre is another preventative project in a dangerous neighbourhood. This project is run by a local Judo teacher and his wife and the children are given judo lessons as well as being helped to improve their lives. Howard Boulter said: ?The great thing about this is that £1,000 in Brazil will equal five or six times of spending here. ?It will enable the rescue mission to provide a place for the street children to live in and another room for a young man to help the younger children. ? Having been involved with many charity evenings at the Leg of Mutton for many years, it is a good way for the community to have fun and raise money for a worthy cause.?
