BRILLIANT performances by two youngsters from Tavistock Athletics Club scooped them gold medals in the first ever Youth Triathlon for the Plymouth area at the College of St Mark and St John last Sunday.

Kayleigh Wonnacott, aged eleven, won the ten and eleven-year girls' age group, competing against almost 40 other athletes from all over the area.

Kayleigh managed her 75-metre swim, 2,200-metre cycle ride and 800-metre run in just 12 minutes, 11 seconds.

And nine-year-old Robynne Honey took the gold medal in the eight and nine-year-olds' section — again competing against more than 30 children.

Robynne swam 50 metres, cycled 900 metres and ran 400 metres in an incredible six minutes, 52 seconds.

Tavistock coach Shane Wonnacott said regular athletics training and swimming at Kelly College proved 'invaluable' to the girls' success.

Six other club members also competed in what proved a challenging and exciting set of events.

'All the juniors from the club who took part thoroughly enjoyed themselves and acquitted themselves well on the day — they said they couldn't wait for the next one!' said Shane, who paid tribute to Marjon for organising such a big event so successfully.

Other results were:

8-9 Girls: Grace Perry, 10:01; 8-9 Boys: Nathan Wonnacott, 8:06; 10-11 Girls: Sarah Guy, 14:04; 10-11 Boys: Jimmy Hubbard 13:53; Adam Roberts 14:22; Thomas Honey 14:26.
