TAVISTOCK Athletic Club held their annual trophy presentation evening on Saturday.

Trophies were presented by Sonya Ellis, regional athletic co-ordinator and team manager for South West Athletics. In his address, club chairman Robin Musgrave spoke of an ?annus mirabelis? or wonderful year for the club.

His speech covered the club?s successes over the last winter season with excellent individual and team results in the cross-country Westward League and the county championships, the latter seeing Tavistock senior men come home with the bronze medal in the overall team event and the silver medal for the vet men.

County selection also followed for Richard Drage, Paul Rowe and Emma Passmore. The cross-country season was crowned with the club winning the DML mini-league including individual victories for Nathan Wonnacott, Chloe Bassett, Alex Richards, Emma Passmore, Adam Tofield and Adam Holland.

In the Devon Sportshall league the club had an unforgettable season concluding with a wonderful overall victory in the league, resulting in 24 junior members going on to represent Devon at regional level and Adam Tofield and Alex McCarthy being selected to represent the region at the national finals at the indoor arena in Birmingham.

Robin Musgrave spoke of a similar success story through the summer with increasingly good turnouts for the Devon track and field league with juniors? mums and dads filling the gaps in the various events.

The final result was a further resounding victory, with the Tavistock club winning the league for the first time.

On the road race front club successes were more widespread but there was a particularly impressive result for the club at the Bideford Marathon which incorporated the county championship. Again Tavistock registered a series of individual and team successes. Success at the London Marathon was also mentioned with Steve Groombridge finishing in the top 300 places and in overall 16th place in his vet category.

Reference was made of the jogging section of the club which continues to grow in strength and fitness.

In the final section of awards Robin Musgrave spoke of the achievements of Richard Drage, the winner of the Outstanding Man trophy who won the gold medal in the Westward League?s Vet 40 category and the bronze medal in the overall senior men?s event. Richard went on to represent Devon in the Inter-counties and continued his successful year winning the silver medal in the 1500m and the bronze medal in the 3,000m in the south-west track and field championships.

The winner of the Outstanding Girl trophy was Kyrelle Burton having achieved national qualifying times for her age-group in the 100m event.

The Outstanding Boy trophy was won by Adam Tofield. This was in recognition of his success in both the Sportshall League and on the track.

The final presentation was for Club Member of the Year. Robin Musgrave announced the winner as Neil McClung and spoke of his contribution to the club as a parent, a coach, a competitor and a committee member who has supported the club in numerous ways during the year.

Robin thanked the coaches. These included Liz Fulton, Bryan Tofield, Keith Hubbard, Neil McClung, Steve Fraquet, Llew Jones and chief junior coach Shane Wonnacott.

The presentation concluded with a presentation of flowers, a vote of thanks to Sonya Ellis for presenting the trophies by Kayleigh Wonnacott on behalf of all the junior members.
