FOR the first time ever Historic England has released a detailed assessment of the Westcountry’s ‘at risk’ heritage sites, revealing that some local areas are deteriorating.
The register compares all of the sites on the heritage at risk register, from houses to hillforts, to gain an understanding of the type of historic monuments most at risk.
In the report, Andrew Vines, planning director for Historic England in the South West said: ‘There are things that make each region special and, once lost, will mean a sense of our region’s character is lost too.’
There are 1,562 assets on the South West 2015 heritage at risk register, making up 28.2% of the national total of 5,534 assets.
In comparison to the national register, the South West has 62.2% of all hillforts and 58.7% of all types of cairns.
The South West has now removed 28% (446) of the entries that were on the 2010 register, exceeding the national target of 25%.
