SPECIALIST work is due to start at half-term on removing waste materials containing asbestos from Tavistock College. The material was discovered during operations to remove temporary classrooms from the rear of the college site. They had become surplus to requirements following the completion of the new languages block. Work to remove the classrooms was stopped immediately when a substance believed to contain asbestos was uncovered. Subsequent tests revealed it was asbestos and the contaminated area was immediately sealed off to contain the material. Regular air samples have been taken which have confirmed there is no hazard for students or staff. Experts believe the material comes from two sheds that were demolished some time before the mobile accommodation was brought onto the site at least 20 years ago. The contaminated material will be removed to an approved site using a licensed contactor. Devon County Council plans to carry out the work over the half-term break next week to minimise the effect upon the college.
