Artists’ group

YOUR front page report (November 13) of the spiralling charges to the Tavistock Group of Artists (TGA) for the hire of the town hall contains a factual error. Town clerk Roger Howard was reported as saying that

? . . . Tavistock Group of Artists has not been in contact with the council about the town hall hire fees?.

As treasurer of the group I telephoned the deputy town clerk, Ms Rosemary Kehoe, on July 11 2003, shortly after receiving notification of the new charges. During a long conversation I endeavoured to obtain some justification for the 18.8% increase in the fees, given current inflation rates of about 3.5%, but with no success.

The TGA only contacted MP John Burnett when they failed to get any response from the town council.
