AN art exhibition at Walkhampton Memorial Hall will help to raise funds for the National Coastwatch Institution's station at Rame Head in Cornwall.

Various local artists and craft makers are helping the National Coastwatch Institution by staging an exhibition of their work.

Walkhampton Memorial Hall will be hosting the event from August 29 to September 1. It will open from 10am to 7pm Thursday to Saturday and from 10am to 4pm on Sunday.

Admission is free and refreshments will be available. There is also a charity preview evening being held there on Wednesday, August 28 from 6.30pm onwards.

David Taylor, the manager at Rame Head, said: 'We are very grateful that the Walkampton Art and Craft Exhibition has chosen the National Coastwatch this year as their charity.

'The work which we undertake on a daily basis is important to provide the "eyes along the coast" to spot any holiday makers, fishermen, other sea users and coast walkers who may need help and assistance from the emergency services.'

The charity was formed in 1994 after two local fishermen died in the sea below a closed coastguard station near the Lizard.

Rame Head Lookout was opened in May 1998 with 16 volunteers and now has more than 60 watchkeepers who are there on a rota basis during daylight hours.
