ART students from Tavistock College have been painting the town red — and all sorts of other colours too — to help brighten up the hoardings behind which the town's new library is rising.
The mural, on the theme of 'bookworm', features dragons and other mythical creatures as well as 'bookworms'.
The idea for the mural came from WestDEN, a local charity whose Sustainable Communities project aims to help regenerate rural areas suffering recession or change.
Devon Highways, the town and borough councils have all helped out. Jewson and Tavistock Decorating Supplies donated paint and brushes, and local councillor and mature student Caroline Keane lent a hand with the brush-work.
Building contractor EBC's site agent George Richard said the work added a splash of colour to the site, and Caroline Rae of WestDEN said it was excellent.
'It has brightened up a very dull hoarding and is a good advertisement for the skills of Tavistock College,' she said. 'I stood near it recently to watch the carnival procession and from what I overheard there was nothing but compliments for it.'
Maggie Squire, a former learning support assistant of the art department, has recently been working with students as part of her town hall banner project.
Art department head Ann Wroath said: 'The art department has never opted for a quiet life, but all these projects coming at an extremely busy time of year reflect our commitment to taking art out into the community which the college serves.'
l The recent annual A-level summer art exhibition held in the college refectory has been replaced by one featuring GCSE art. Anyone wishing to see the work is welcome to do so during college hours if they report to reception first.
