WINKLEIGH Primary School has been nationally recognised for its outstanding contribution to arts and cultural education.

Artsmark Gold has been awarded to the primary school for its commitment to, and excellence in, arts and cultural education.

Artsmark is Arts Council England's flagship programme which enables schools and other organisations to evaluate, strengthen and celebrate their arts and cultural provision. Artsmark is delivered by Trinity College London.

Naomi Sambou, arts leader at Winkleigh Primary, said: 'Artsmark has helped us evaluate the importance of the arts for our children and in doing so has raised the profile of the arts in our school.

'It has enabled us to realise not only our strengths but highlighted areas where we can improve.

'We set up an arts council of arts ambassadors elected by their peers who are now the voice for the arts in school.

'They were pivotal in the journey to achieving Artsmark. Outside organisations have contributed too.

'Drama workshops with Entertainingly Different, for example, have been essential in showing our commitment to arts education. Cardboard artist James Lake helped celebrate our success.

'He worked with Year 1 and Year 2 on potion bottles to be displayed at the Northcott Theatre in the production of George's Marvellous Medicine.'

David Chaplin, lead primary advisor, said: 'Im delighted that Winkleigh School has been nationally recognised as being a creative school.

'Holding Artsmark status means they are leading the way in providing children with a range of excellent arts and cultural experiences.

'Winkleigh is a good school and as well as maintaining high standards in core subjects, is committed to ensuring children benefit from a broad and engaging curriculum.'
