East Devon Senior Cup, round 2
Okehampton Argyle 2
Axminster Town 1
SENIOR 1 side Axminster gave a good account of themselves during a goalless first half, with plenty of action in both goalmouths.
Argyle?s best chances fell to Steve Williams and Adam Mortimer, mainly from a stream of crosses supplied by Paul Yip after good runs down the right flank.
Five minutes before the break Stuart Cann was a little unlucky to see his free kick from just outside the penalty box hit the base of the upright then go behind for a goal kick.
At the other end Axminster almost scored following a goalmouth scramble, two saves from Sean Sandercock and a header off the line by Chris Wills kept the scoresheet level.
Axminster enjoyed the lion?s share of the play in the early part of the second half, but failed to turn chances into goals.
Ten minutes into the half a solo break down the left by Robbie Sandercock saw him beat two defenders before crashing a shot against an upright.
Fifteen minutes from time, following a double save from Sean Sandercock, the ball rolled out kindly to Andy Fairford who accepted an easy chance to shoot home for the visitors.
Axminster should have gone further ahead moments later, but Chris Wills was again on hand to block a shot on the goal-line. With time running out Argyle stepped up the pace. Another run down the right by Yip this time saw his cross converted by Mortimer to put Argyle level.
With the game into injury time Mortimer again broke into the Axminster penalty area, but this time he was brought down by a clumsy tackle, and a penalty was awarded.
Cann stepped up to score from the spot and put Argyle into the quarter-final draw.
This week Argyle are away to fellow strugglers Sidmouth Town, kick-off 2.30pm. Leave all-weather car park 12.30pm.
Okehampton Cup round 1
Okehampton Argyle 4
Follygate 1
ARGYLE moved into the next round after a comfortable win over neighbours Follygate, but it was not all one-way traffic ? Folly put in a good performance.
Robbie Miller opened the scoring for Argyle after 15 minutes, side-footing in a cross from Steve Williams..
This was closely followed by Mortimer crashing a shot against the bar, then after 25 minutes Stuart Cann scored direct from a free kick from just outside the box.
Follygate defended well until just before the break, Adam Mortimer then made it 3-0 after jinking his way past two defenders before shooting home.
The second half was an untidy affair, with Argyle only doing what was necessary to get the right results.
Folly reminded them that the game was not quite over when they scored from an indirect free kick five minutes from time.
Steve Williams scored a fourth for Argyle just before the end when he followed up a good shot from Robbie Sandercock that was blocked by a defender and rebounded to him.
