South West Peninsula League Division one east Okehampton 3 Axminster 3 ARGYLE end the season with a thriller and will only have one regret; that is once again not taking all three points. Both teams provided an entertaining game that flowed from end to end. Steve Williams and Phillip Evans for Argyle tested the Axminster keeper in the early stages, but the score remained level until the 37th minute, when Axminster's number seven calmly slotted the ball over the Argyle keeper from just inside the area. Michael Vernon broke out of the Argyle defence and after carrying the ball for 60 yards played a good through ball for Steve Kinsey to test the visiting keeper once again. In the second half Argyle did draw level when a good move involving Matthew Mortimer and Steve Kinsey set up Steve Williams to slot home from close range on 50 minutes. Within five minutes Argyle found themselves in front when Kinsey's trickery worked an opening for Steve Williams to complete his brace. At this point Axminster were really struggling to stay with the pace and determination that Argyle had injected into the game and it was Kinsey once again who had the visitors' defence in trouble when he wove his way through the right side and delivered a good ball into the area for Robbie Miller to hammer home on 60 minutes. Axminster found a second breath midway through the second half and pulled a goal back when their number nine worked the ball wide and fired in a cross for the number 12 to score from six yards. The scores could have been level on 85 minutes but for Daniel Malcolm pulling off a superb save, tipping the ball over from a fierce shot. The never say die attitude of Axminster paid off and they did equalise in the 90th minute when their left back pushed forward and smashed in a low drive, giving his team a share of the points. Argyle can take a lot of satisfaction from the season in this newly formed league, and with a little bit more belief in the first half of the season would have finished in the top half of the league.
