EVER wondered how you can put something back into the community, make a difference or change things in your town?

With elections in May, Tavistock Town Council is arranging an information evening on Monday, February 23 for those who want to find out more about the council and what being a town councillor involves.

Town mayor Councillor Harry Smith said: 'It's important to help people find out what being a councillor means.

'We want to encourage people across age, gender, skills and interests to think about how they can serve their community in what can be an immensely fulfilling and challenging role.'

The town council is one of the largest in the country and oversees services ranging from property management to markets and from events such as the goose fair to play parks and open spaces.

Town clerk Carl Hearn said: 'The reasons people stand for election are varied but they most often include contributing to public life, representing their community and playing a role in shaping local services.'

The council has 17 councillors who represent three areas, known as wards, in the town. It is the first tier of local government working alongside Devon County Council and West Devon Borough Council.

The information evening will provide an opportunity to find out more about the council, how it works and to quiz a longstanding councillor on what being a local councillor is really like.
