THE inception of the 'West Devon Drive'. (Times, January 14), aimed at regenerating local businesses and jobs must command everyone's support.
However, I do wonder whether everybody's priorities are in the right order? Surely the first jobs should be to get the heavy lorries off this road, get a speed limit agreed and somehow enforced and only then try to attract more lighter traffic that will bring the sort of trade to the area that is so badly needed.
I was slightly reassured to be told by Mr Westlake that these questions were being dealt with, but will greatly look forward to knowing in more detail exactly what is proposed on these fronts.
To entice more traffic on to the old A30 without first finding a properly enforceable solution to these problems, which is likely to be extremely hard to achieve, might not be a totally attractive proposition to everyone.
The jobs and prosperity of those reliant on businesses along the road may demand priority but the safety and welfare of local inhabitants, their children and animals also need to be carefully considered.
