A GATHERING of those interested in regenerating orchards in the Tamar Valley with market gardeners of the past takes place in Tavistock next Monday (October 21) to celebrate National Apple Day.
The Tamar Valley Market Gardening Project will be holding an archive film show about the orchard heritage of the valley in Tavistock Town Hall.
Organiser Vanni Cook said although the event looked back at the history of market gardening, it also looked forward to the future. ?There?s tremendous interest in replanting apple and cherry orchards on both sides of the Tamar,? she said.
The afternoon will also offer a chance to examine vintage orchard photographs and apple publications supplied by Calstock History Group and Tavistock History Society.
Refreshments will be provided, with apple cake made by local cook Beryl Cridland.
Around 150 people are expected to attend the invitation only event in Tavistock Town Hall, but there are still some spaces available. For further information please contact 01822 832469.
Earlier that morning, Celia Steven, grand-daughter of Mr Merryweather, the man who originally discovered the bramley apple, will be at St Andrew?s Primary School, Buckland Monachorum to judge an apple pie competition for pupils.
