WARD and Chowen, auctioneers at Tavistock Livestock Centre, report a superb trade at the April fair with an entry of 282 cattle and 42 sheep meeting a 100% clearance with a ring full of buyers.
Prices topped at £900 for two 23/24mo South Devon x heifers from A J Eggins, Roborough. Store steers sold to £865 for a 23mo South Devon x, also from A J Eggins, Roborough. Top price per kilo recorded was 207ppk for an 11mo Charolais x steers from C J and W A Viggers, Milton Abbot, which realised £560.
Breeding bulls sold to £900 for a 6yo South Devon bull from W J and M C Clark, Camelford.
Cows and calves sold to £830 for a 9yo Aberdeen Angus x cow with a 2mo Limousin X steer at foot from R E Dawe and Son, Milton Abbot. In-calf cows sold to £600 for a 4yo South Devon x from E J Doidge and Son, Whitchurch.
Young cattle (0–14mo) topped at £710 for a bunch of four 11/15mo Charolais x steers from M H Eggins, Roborough. Similar aged heifers sold to £572 for a bunch of three 14/15mo Limousin x from D G C M and W A Horton, Roborough.
Other notable store cattle prices included £840 for a 15mo South Devon steer from A J Eggins, Roborough, £778 for two 16/18mo South Devon x steers from S G Palmer and Sons, Horndon, £762 for two 24mo Limousin x heifers from D G C M and W A Horton, Roborough and £760 for two 17/18mo Limousin x steers from C and S Serpell, Sparkwell.
The store cattle sale started with the first Stirk sale which topped at £645 for a bunch of six 10/11mo South Devon steers from J W Hillson, Bere Alston and £475 for a bunch of five 12mo Devon x heifers from R T B Agriculture, Holsworthy.
In the sheep pens prices topped at £72.50 for a pen of store lambs from N J and Mrs A J Pollard, Yelverton. Grazing ewes topped at £66 for a pen of eight ewes from B J and L Landick, Eggworthy.
Couples sold to £130 for a pen of fouw double couples from S G Palmer and Sons, Horndon.
A special sheep sale of couples. stored and slaughter sheep takes place on Tuesday April 20.
