THE Oasis Centre in Gunnislake has been saved from the axe yet again by anonymous donations.

The community centre, which is run by the Calstock Development Trust, has been struggling to survive for the last couple of years due to a lack of funding, but community spirit is keeping it alive.

This latest cash injection will keep the centre open for another couple of months during which time the trust will try to obtain some longer-term funding.

A valued facility in the parish, Oasis provides free help and support for people looking for work, information on available jobs, help with CVs, computer training and work experience as a volunteer.

Like many other voluntary organisation the development trust is struggling to find funding, even for the basic costs of rent and services, to keep Oasis going.

Oasis functions through the goodwill of volunteers and anyone who could spare a couple of hours on a Tuesday or Thursday would be most welcome.

Trust member Norma Greenslade said: 'We are very pleased to receive the donations. It will give us a bit of leeway. We may still have to close this year but we are trying our hardest to find the funds to keep it open.'

The centre is open from 9.30am to 4pm and Link into Learning offers free courses on Wednesday afternoons which include how to use a computer to manage your money and even the opportunity to obtain a City and Guilds qualification.

Help with tracing family trees using the internet is offered in the family history sessions on Tuesday afternoons and the Connexions service for young people is available by appointment.

Anyone can visit the centre in Fore Street and find out what it offers. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer contact volunteer co-ordinator Ottilia Pochat on 01822 834303.
