THE weather was kind to Tavistock Golf Club with a succession of fine days for the club's major competitions.
The Alice Rose Trophy, played in conjunction with the July Stableford, was won by Ann Martyn with 42 points, who also came first in division two. In division one Penny Deacon was first with 38pts and Sue Eastwood was top of division three.
Amid the days of wind and rain the ladies three ball better ball open was played in brilliant weather! A field of 129 played on a course that was in wonderful condition with the winners, Wendy Wroe (Tavistock), Jane Wright and Gill Whitlock (Staddon Heights) coming in with 73 pts; second, Sam Jarrett. Wendy Buckland and Margaret Jakeman (Looe), 71, on countback from third, Jacqui James, Jane Hurst and Beth Gander (Royal North Devon); fourth, Pat Jeens, Anne Jones and Mo Sparrow (Downes Crediton), 70; 5, Linda Northover, Elizabeth Ward and Jenny Raisun (Honiton), 67, on countback from seventh, Sally Timpson, Jenny Bryant and Ginny Samborne (Tavistock); eighth. Ann Russell, Trudi Luke and Myra Sussex (Tavistock), 65.
The lady veterans prizes were won by Jean Davies, Sonya Davis and Marion Tyrie (Stover).
The next day the mens mid-week Stableford was cancelled because of heavy rain! The mens' section had better luck, when for the first time in four years, their guest day was played in dry weather. The winners were Mike Apps and Paul Rattenbury, 47 pts; 2, Alan Gawman and Ali Troller with 45 on countback from third, Rod Hillman and Steve Wairish; fourth, Tom Dodd and Alan Bridgewater.
The dry weather continued for the Roland Bailey Trophy played the next day. A mixed greensomes competition, the trophy presented by Par Hoar in memory of her father, was won by Rod and Maggie Hillman with 46 points; 2, Dennis and Lyn Jones, 44, and third, Dave and Peggy Burge with 43 pts on countback from Bill and Lyn Alderman.
The Withington Bowl, played in conjunction with the ladies monthly medal was won by Belinda McSherry with a nett 74 on countback from Sybil Cole.
Third in division one was Bev Ruth with nett 75. In division two, 1, Margaret Burn with nett 75; 2, Gloria Westhead with nett 77 on countback from Pat Taylor.
In the mens monthly Stableford, division one, 1, James Macfarlane 40pts; 2, John Harding, 37; 3, Adam Waddle, 35. In division two, 1, Sam Willetts, 41; 2, Andrew Macfarlane, 38; 3, Dick Stead 36 pts.
