A TAVISTOCK man has overcome his fear of water and last month successfully completed 12 lengths of the Meadowlands swimming pool. Two years ago, Andrew Mitchell, who lives in Waltair House in Tavistock, would not even go near water and shied away from the idea of visiting a swimming pool. But on Monday, October 8 Andrew took on the challenge to swim a dozen lengths ? raising money for Talking Heads at the same time. Andrew is a member of Talking Heads, a group of people with learning difficulties who live in and around the Tavistock area. The group meets once a month to discuss problems and to share experiences. Its costs are limited but have to cover room hire, travel expenses of speakers, and various administrative costs. To help meet these costs, Andrew volunteered to complete the challenge. Ever since Andrew began to break his fear of water and of swimming a year ago, Sandy Bluett, a senior support worker at Waltair House, has acted as his main trainer in the pool, and she was there to support him during his swim. A dozen well-wishers and supporters were also there to cheer Andrew on and to congratulate him on his achievement. Now Andrew is collecting all the money promised to him in sponsorship, which is around £130. Andrew expressed thanks to everyone who sponsored him.
