THERE was success for Okehampton Cycle Club member Andy Retter in the recent South West Division Road Race Championships, taking silver medal position in the hotly contested 100-mile race.
There were 20 riders taking part and the race was run over a six-lap course.
Following an early lone breakaway by Alan Ryder (Plymouth Corinthians) there were various attacks by the bunch to get back on terms with the leader.
The eventual winner, Steve Lampier (Cyclelogic.co.uk) made up the ground and took the lead, leading up to the last lap with Andrew in hot pursuit cutting a swathe through the chasing bunch of riders in order to get
into medal contention.
At the end Andrew had shaken off the remaining chasing riders to become the only challenge to Lampier, but had to settle for second place with a time of 3.53.54.
Following the club?s own open time trial event the summer series restarted last Thursday evening. In good weather, seven competitors took part in a ride against the clock on the demanding 11.2 mile course from Mole Avon to Whiddon Down and back on the old A30 road.
Brian Dixon made his first appearance of the season and dominated proceedings, achieving the fastest time of the night of 30.04. Guest rider Mark Canvin from Tavistock Wheelers came second with 32.01 with third place going to Mike Rice clocking 32.06. Also making her first appearance in the series this year was Louise Amery who took a break from school exams to achieve a personal best for the course of 35.57.
Full results: B Dixon, 30.04; M Canvin 32.01; M Rice 32.06 pb; J Short 33.33; B Sharp 34.08; D Baskerville 35.19; L Amery 35.57pb.
